This essay can be your thoughts, feelings, ideas or experiences pertaining to Counterintelligence, National Security, Alliance Building, and/or National Defense. Ground-breaking innovative ideas/solutions are desired. See the attached Vanguard article which was part of SGT Flory's application for which she received a 2008 scholarship from the Lint Center for National Security Studies; MICA participated in her recognition by providing SGT Flory with a one-year complimentary membership.

The Ben Franklin Scholarship at Lint Center ($500)
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was an American inventor, journalist, printer, diplomat, and statesman.
The Lint Center is pleased to inform you of a recent donation which will sponsor two new scholarships ($500 in July 2009 and January 2010). This generous (new) supporter has requested that the Lint Center determine what these two scholarships should be named and has asked that they honor a legacy of an inspiring individual. The first scholarship will be named after Ben Franklin who was an American inventor, journalist, printer, diplomat, and statesman.
As per the donors request, the primary focus of these scholarships will be on America’s use of “soft-power” and the tangible benefits of cultural awareness in international affairs. Some of the key themes of interest include human security (Economic security, Food security, Health security, and Environmental security), conflict resolution, and personal diplomacy. The focus here is on alternative uses, strategies, and tactics to ensure America’s security, at home and aboard.
Ben Franklin was a dedicated leader who may not have been a warrior but showed how soft power can help a small nation survive. Info Page

The scholarship is dedicated in honor of Staff Sgt. Richard Eaton, a United States Army Counterintelligence Special Agent and Bronze Star recipient who died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on August 12, 2003. Lee and Byun International Relations and Cultural Awareness Scholarship, ($500)
True Freedom Fighters. Eekwon Lee and Jongja Byun had an incredible life with a true appreciation for freedom and tough choices. Two people who saw tough times during the Korean War and later traveled the world to pursue better opportunities for the family. This will be competitively awarded in the amount of $500. 2009 Winner Magdalena Ji-in Seol holds a B.A. in International Politics from Seoul National University in South Korea. She did her Master’s study in Forced Migration (Refugee Studies) at University of Oxford as the British Chevening Scholar and the Clarendon Fund Scholar. She worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Seoul and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. After getting involved in a series of international volunteer works, she published a book in 2004 based on her experiences. Information Page about this Korean War Navy Veteran and essay focus. Write an essay with the topic of diplomacy, to include outside of normal diplomatic channels. This can be focused on personal diplomacy successes that can show the impact of one person/group to change the opinion of others around the world. 2009 Winner Juan Ricafort is a sophomore at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service majoring in Science, Technology, and International Affairs. With a focus on Security Studies, his academic interests include issues of nuclear nonproliferation, arms control, homeland security, and counterterrorism. He is a Southern California native who will be studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan during spring 2010. His essay is available.

SGT Jennifer Flory, winner of Jim & Anna Hyonjoo Lint Scholarship, had an interesting idea on use of Scrap Metal for a safer Middle East which she describes in her essay. Joe Linhart, winner of Virginia and Frank Misselhorn Memorial Scholarship, takes a look at Effects Based Operations in his essay. Spoken like a true artilleryman, Linhart contends that between war and diplomacy, there is no such thing as a lethal or non-lethal target; all are simply targets. However it is the method of engagement that can either be lethal or non-lethal in nature. Press Release
Written as a companion piece to an article published in 02138 magazine called "My Iraq" (http://www.02138mag.com/magazine/article/1676.html), Joe Linhart's article "Our Army, Our America" takes a provocative look at Iraq, America and what it's like to serve in uniform.
The former Harvard educated, Army LT also has authorized his personal essay to be published which shows how his experiences have formed his opinions on how to conduct military or diplomatic operations.
Runner Up Tianchi Wu has an essay looking at a strategic view of the Middle East and US interaction.
Runner Up Barbara Howard has an essay discussing Computer Network Security.

We have posted three of the essays. The competition was challenging. The winner had a great essay in addition to outstanding history and potential. He has worked in Washington DC, experienced the political process, and excelled in his jobs. His personal essay displayed excellent future potential for his employment in the National Service arena. There were a good number of Iraq veterans and some currently deployed. This round of competition showed the need for more scholarships to be awarded in the future because there are some great people with great potential to improve National Security.

The winner: Timothy W. Coleman worked in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Adam Putnam of Florida and he served as Deputy Political Director for Secretary Mel Martinez on his 2004 U.S. Senate Campaign. Coleman graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A in History (‘03); he is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma International Honors Society, the Financial Management Association’s National Honor Society, recipient of the Sigma Tau Delta Writing Award (‘08), and he received an M.B.A with a specialization in Finance from Barry University, Andreas School of Business (‘08).Next Coleman will pursue a Masters in Public and International Affairs with a concentration in Security and Intelligence Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.
