Recognizing service to emerging national security leaders
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 11, 2014 – President George H. W. Bush’s Points of Light Foundation today awarded the Lint Center for National Security Studies with a Daily Point of Light Award on the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Lint Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the next generation of national security workers, was awarded this honor for its continued dedication to service through its scholarship and mentorship programs.
“This is a tremendous honor and a most appreciated recognition,” said James R. Lint, Special Agent (Retired), Chairman and CEO of the Lint Center for National Security Studies. “I am grateful to Points of Light Foundation for highlighting the incredible work that the Lint Center team continues to carryout and for the opportunity to serve the next generation of great American patriots. This is a powerful validation point and we are humbled to receive it, especially on this important anniversary.”
Lint attributes the success of the Center and the Points of Light award to the dedicated volunteer team, saying, “This award was won because of the hard work and dedication of our all-volunteer force. None of this would have been possible had it not been for our incredible team, their tireless efforts, and their passion to execute on the mission at hand. This is their award and I wish to thank all of the Lint Center volunteers, past and present, for all that they do and continue to do.”
“As a leading geopolitical intelligence and consulting firm that provides strategic analysis and forecasting to individuals and organizations around the world, Stratfor welcomes the opportunity to support aspiring national security and intelligence community workers,” said Fred Burton, Vice President of Intelligence at Stratfor.
“On this 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our country, we are solemnly reminded of the serious challenges facing policy and decision makers as they strive to navigate the complexities of global geopolitical issues. Stratfor proudly supports the Lint Center for National Security Studies in its ongoing quest to identify and mold the next generation of counterintelligence and national security leaders, and we congratulate the entire Lint Center team for this important and well-deserved honor from the Points of Light organization.”
In addition to awarding scholarships, the Lint Center was recognized by the Points of Light Foundation for its mentorship program consisting of over 200 mentors. “We created the Lint Center to fill a niche void,” explains Kay Lee Nichols, Director and Scholarship Committee Member, “one that teamed emerging and talented national security rookies with veterans in the national security community.” The program connects emerging leaders with seasoned professionals that are active and retired national security practitioners from the military, defense, intelligence and academic communities. Lint Center mentors provide first-hand knowledge of the opportunities available in the field to outstanding scholars.
The Lint Center, run as an entirely volunteer based non-profit, has awarded 32 merit-based scholarships in increments of $500-$1500 since 2007. It awards scholarships to students pursuing an interest in intelligence and national security studies in January and July of each year.
