During the fall semester, the Lint Center’s Director of External Affairs, Bridget Struthers, had the privilege of presenting scholarship winner Josiah Depaoli the Lint Center Award of Excellence at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Mr. Depaoli won the Jim & Anna Hyonjoo Lint Scholarship during the July 2015 scholarship competition for his essay on U.S.-Chinese Relations.
“As a web-based organization, it’s very rare that we have the opportunity to present an award to our winners in person. We were excited to organize this ceremony and look forward to doing this again in the future,” said Mr. Jim Lint. “It has been a year of firsts for the Lint Center and this was certainly one of them. The award ceremony at William & Mary shows that we have Lint Center ambassadors with the desire to get involved in their communities and publicly recognize our scholarship winners,” added Mr. Lint.
“Presenting the award to Josiah in person reminded me of why I volunteer with the Lint Center,” said Ms. Struthers. “It’s a great feeling when you help hard-working students achieve their goals and open doors to future career opportunities. And it’s even better when you get to shake their hand, meet their professors, and congratulate them in person.”
Mr. Depaoli’s essay focused on the issues that U.S. defense officials face in terms of China’s rise in the global system and increased focus on military strength. He is currently a senior at the College of William & Mary majoring in Economics with a minor in History. Mr. Depaoli hopes to forward U.S. interests in the future by applying his Mandarin Chinese language skills and experience as an Eagle Scout and former Army ROTC cadet.
The Lint Center has awarded 38 scholarships since 2007. Scholarship competitions are held twice per year, in January and July. For more information or to apply for a scholarship, please visit www.lintcenter.org.
